The labs at uni are normally quiet on a Friday afternoon, but they were completely abandoned when Alan gave his PhD exiting seminar. Speaking to a room that was so packed that people were sitting on the floor, Alan delivered a talk covering numerous aspects of community function in Shark Bay microbial mats, including microbial interactions, functional niches, and microbial dark matter. In a talk that felt like being punched in the face with new and novel information, Alan explained his 10 (soon to be 11) papers worth of findings to a captivated crowd. After that brilliant talk, we’re all excited to see what Alan comes up with next!
